I work primarily in charcoal on paper. In the moments I bring the charcoal to the paper, I’m unwinding all of the conditions that inhibit freedom. Voices from the past and from the culture are constantly opining about what creations are sufficient and insufficient. I find that this is among the reasons most people are afraid to make art—and I’m not excluded from this fear. I want you to know that I’m with you, that creation is your birthright, and you’re free to make whatever marks you want.
